You can also visit the Torre Vella of Salou (‘the old tower’ or tower of Charles V), which began to be built in 1530 under the order of the Archbishop of Tarragona, Pere de Cardona, as a result of the constant attacks from pirates. Subsequently, the building was enabled as a venue for exhibitions and cultural events, and is currently the Municipal Museum of Contemporary Enamel, and also hosts weddings. The tower is surrounded by a garden that has a sculpture from 1990 known as ‘ Dansa of les Gràcies ‘, by Arturo Aldoma Puig, representing three maidens.

In ancient times, Salou possessed an important commercial port, and this is reflected in the existing connection between the sea and many of Salou’s representative constructions.

For instance, the former Marine Capitancy was built in 1820, and still retains to a large extent on its original appearance, in spite of the confiscations that suffered in the 20th century and that it has become a private property.

Moreover, at the beginning of the 19th century, its quay gained importance. It aspired to take part of a project to create a channel of navigation between Reus and Salou, but never came to fruition. However, as this was used by fishermen from Salou, you can see today the Monument to the Fisherman, built in 1990, with the inscription ‘with the effort of an entire town’.

The Cape of Salou is crowned with its Lighthouse, one of the most important of the Costa Dorada. There, on the cliff, there is a viewpoint that does not disappoint with its breathtaking views.
At the same time, in the 18th century, Salou witnessed the birth of what is now its oldest temple, the Parish Church of Santa Maria del Mar. Initially, it was only a small chapel built for the members of the Guild of port activity, but it has grown with the passage of time. Inside murals of Lluís María Güell can be seen.
