The Castle of Tossa de Mar was built in 1187 on the request of the abbot of Ripoll (locality Pre- Catalan Pyrenees ), which also allowed to construct within and outside the fortified area. The castle is located in the old Town ‘Vila Vella ‘. Castle of Tossa de Mar The great tower of the castle was demolished in 1917 to be rebuilt into the current Lighthouse of Tossa. The walls of the Vila Vella are symbol of Tossa and are considered the only nad unique example of a fortified medieval town that can be found in the Catalan coast. They were built in the twelfth century and rebuilt in the fourteenth century and until today are kept in good conditions its reinforced walls, four terraces and three cylindrical towers, the Codolar, the Joanas and the Hores.

These walls are classified as a Historic- Artistic Monument. The Municipal Museum, opened in 1935, is located inside the Vila Vella, on the square of the painter Roig i Soler, and occupies the biggest part of the walled building, the house of Batlle de Sac, XIV century Gothic palace. It houses a large collection of art, ceramics and glass, as well as a room of archeology. The tower Codolar also belongs to the museum. The castle of Tossa de Mar is a charming place worth visiting.
