Medplaya has several hotels located on the Catalan coast in Spain. Every summer, for 30 years, we have held an event in our Hotel Calypso in Salou with the “Colla Vella dels Xiquets de Valls“, one of the most famous groups in the world of “castellers” (human towers). This year, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of our collaboration, the “colla” dared to build a tower with up to 9 levels! This is an unprecedented event, since 9-level human towers are usually performed at very few sites. Such a feat has never been achieved in Salou, in fact only 61 towns have the honor of having seen a tower like this. So, thanks to the this construction at Hotel Calypso, Salou now has a spot on the map of “places where 9-level towers have been built ”

A typical tradition that you can not miss if you visit Catalonia

Since 2010, when these human towers (castells) were listed as intangible cultural heritage by the UNESCO, this Catalan tradition is known and shared worldwide. The amazing coordination, balance, tension and effort that these human towers require don’t leave anybody who observes them indifferent.
